"The Post" By JONATHAN GENSCH

Walking around the Quad you will see these 2 statues of a bobcat and also the stallions with a man. These statues are meaningful to ever student here at texas state. The Quad is a place where people can go and always count of someone offering something to them people cooking and someone with a smile on. But the Quad is also where there is pollution. From trash to cigarettes to cooking coals and smoke.

1) The best example of sustainable practice in the Quad would be the trash cans in every corner and the recycling beens right next to them.
2) When your walking around the Quad around 12-3pm you can count on a good amount of the people to be smoking. With all the smoke in the air they end up just tossing the buds where ever is convenient. Also all the trash that does not make to the can
3) Fist of all smoking is a huge problem. Every time i walk over there i have to cover my nose and mouth because of all the smoking so the long term would be having no smoking in the Quad signs. A short term affect would be having someone enforce the no smoking or cooking in the Quad and that would lead to a long term affect on the Quad and the health of others.
4) There are many ways we could sit here and say why and how we could help. There are some areas that do need to be addressed. If you grab one person who you see throw something down to pick up the after affects im sure that person will use the trash can from then on. Same goes for cigarettes.

Life in the Quad By Jade Lewis

Life in the quad is truly wonderful and green, but can we sustain that great image of it? The quad is slowly becoming filled with cigarette buds and trash from food stands. This has the potential to destroy the green scenery of the quad, and sustainability will most definitely need to be a factor to counter this situation.

Key Questions

1. The best example of sustainable practices were the amounts of recycling bins and trash bins in almost every corner of the quad. There are also environmentalists whom try to persuade you to join their organization to better the awareness of keeping the community clean.

2The worst examples of non-sustainable practices were the amounts of cigarette buds found on the ground, as well as trash AROUND trash cans, that people seemed too lazy to dispose of.

3. An long term solution would be having no smoking signs in the Quad, due to the amount of pollution and trash build up there is. It's one of the only reasonable resorts.  Also a short term solution would be  the environmentalists in the quad, doing more to raise awareness rather than just trying to recruit. They could have various activities that gain attention and make them more relevant.

4. To raise awareness, I would just let people know how the community is around us, and how it truly affects everyone. It would be slightly difficult, but I just think if people see other groups of students besides the ones "environmentalist organization" cleaning up, than there's a better chance that others would follow.

No Impact (the quad) By: Jennifer Kerr

cigarette butts near Flowers Hall.

More garbage, and cigarette butts just feet from the ramp leading down to the rest of the Quad.
These pictures were taken one afternoon in october. I was in the quad at about 5:30 or so, and no one else was really around. It was very pretty, the weather was great, and the sun was shining. I started walking around wondering what I should take pictures of. Then I started seeing garbage, and cigarette butts everywhere. I suddenly realized just what the janitorial staff had to deal with everyday. So I quickly started snapping pictures.

Key Questions

1. The best example of sustainable practices I saw were the garbage cans, and recycling bins placed in various locations throughout the quad.

2. The worst non-sustainable practices I observed were people just simply ignoring the garbage and recylcing bins, or being lazy. They didn't even bother to open the recycling bins, they just set their garbage on top of the lid. Also people repeatedly just throw their cigarette butts on the ground, or leave their garbage wherever it may fall. None of this really becomes apparent until you see the quad when it is virtually empty and the garbage is all over the place.

3. some long term solutions to this problem would be to try making people more aware of the amount of garbage that is there everyday. Let people see how much they are destroying the beauty of the campus around them. Also trying to enforce the NO SMOKING rules in the quad. This would not only help reduce the environmental impact, but it would also help improve the air quality and health of other students that breathe in the second hand smoke on a daily basis.

4. I would convince the students to implement more sustainable practices by showing them what they are leaving for others to clean up, and by showing them pictures of the quad early in the morning when it is clean, then showing them pictures later in the day when all the students have passed through it and wrecked it. It would be a kind of "before and after" picture. This would demonstrate how they are destroying their own home and campus, as well show the environmental impact it is having.

Sustainability in the Quad by Chris Williams

The quad is always an interesting place to be. The picture shown here is a little piece of how many people come and go during the day and in between classes. There are always stands and sometimes even cooking going on in an attempt to advertise something. This poses a threat to the sustainability of the quad.

1. The best example of sustainability practices in the quad would be the practice of recycling and throwing away trash. There are many dispensaries along the quad for recycling and for trash.

2. Examples of non-sustainability is the trash that does not make it to the trash can. With hundreds and maybe even thousands of people passing through in a day along with stands being set up there is going to be trash that ends up on the ground. This is where the threat comes in to sustainability and high impact of the quad.

3. To lessen the negative impact the quad is having on the environment people could possibly either lessen the amount of stands there are on a given day or get rid of them all together. Also, advertising for cleaning up could be helpful too. The people who put stands out in the quad could come out on a day during the week and help pick up trash and other things the threaten the environment.

4. One way I could convince others to help the environment is by advertising to people in the quad or have an organization specifically for the purpose of cleaning up the quad. Advertising is exactly where all the trash comes from so why not advertise to clean up the trash. If people realized what throwing paper on the ground did they would maybe think twice next time and just throw it away in the trash.

~*Adventures into the Quad*~ By Kristi Barrientos

My adventure into the quad was quite exciting! The weather was amazing and there were few people in this picture to get a great shot on how the quad looked. Although, there was quite an enormous amount of greenery around the area, trash was in all different places from the ground to benches. In the second photo, this is an example of people being lazy and throwing trash wherever they feel like it instead of recycling it.

1. The best examples of sustainable practices in this particular area were the different recycle bins that were outside along with trashcans to keep the quad looking clean. Another example would be environmentalists roaming the quad asking for people to participant in helping to improve the environment.

2. The worst examples of high environmental impacts were the people. In the afternoons, we have people cooking and selling food. This results to more build up in trash and smoke around the area which can cause a major problem if the area is not clean.

3. Some short term remedies would be simply to just get rid of people making BBQ outside the quad and advertising their clubs. Many people from these organizations hand out flyers which eventually end up on the ground. By getting rid of these people for campaigning and cooking it reduces the problem.  A long-term remedy would be to keep recycling after awhile if we continue the cycle it would catch on and people won't even have to think twice about whether or not to throw their trash.

4. They way I would convince others into making little impact on the environment is simply by speaking out. Using your voice is the best thing you could do for people to hear you. I would also create an organization into helping save the environment by announcing it daily on the intercoms of school buildings and even turning to the television to help speak out to the public.

Our Location. . . . .

We have decided that our location for this project will be the Quad!!

The quad seems to pose a challenge to sustainability, and no impact living.
